Interviews with Diplomats in Opening of the Exhibition "Liberal Wormwood"

Austrian Minister and his wife:

Reporter: How do you feel about Mr. Liu Shiming's sculptures in this exhibition?

Austrian Minister and his wife: “The Journey to the West” is the most interesting one which illuminates a Chinese myth. The artwork “Splitting the Mountains to Let the Water Flow” demonstrates a very strong and powerful quality that the character possesses, which represents a sort of “national power”.

A Representative of The United Nation

I’m interested in the two sculptures of “Re-education”. I was moved the instant I saw his works, because I could understand what he described was true. You can see that he really loves these people and their lives, even though the people he portrayed were peasants and the others are underprivileged. I have just been to Xinjiang and I have seen his “Silk Road”. You can tell from these art works his love for the people and for their lives is real.

An Audience from Indonesia

Interviewee: I’m from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, and my husband works in the Culture Department.

Journalist: Could you say something about your view on Mr. Liu’s art works?

Interviewee: Well, his art pieces are very interesting. There are similar artists in Indonesia, but they are rather young compared with him. What Mr. Liu did was to create a historical record and that makes him different.

Journalist: His style has never changed over all these years. His art always shows a deep understanding of people’s life.

Interviewee: His art is indeed very different from ours. The art of our country never pays so much attention to daily life. What we care about are animals, people or architecture but not daily life.

Journalist: Which piece do you like the most in the exhibition?

Interviewee: The one about birds. I like birds.

Journalist: Thank you for your time.

An Audience from Morocco

Interviewee: I come from Morocco.

Journalist: Could you share with us your feelings and thoughts on Mr. Liu’s exhibition?

Interviewee: This is a very interesting and special exhibition. Mr. Liu Shiming has unique techniques. I sincerely congratulate him on his great success in holding such an exhibition.

Journalist: Thank you.

Interviewee: I also wish all Chinese friends a happy life.

Journalist: Thank you very much.

An Audience from Israel

I'm a friend of the Israel Ambassador and his wife. This is my first visit to China, and today is my second day here.
Journalist: Welcome to China. I really like his works.

An Audience from Belarus

Interviewee: This is very good exhibition, a highly professional one. I’m greatly impressed.

Journalist: Which pieces are you particularly interested in?

Interviewee: The large piece called “Splitting the Mountains to Let the Water Flow” caught my eyes which is very vivid. And these as well (pointing to “Boatmen on the Yellow River”). These boats are beautifully made, and the local headbands-wearing peasants in north Shaanxi Province area were also portrayed in a vivid and real way. It’s excellent!

A Counsellor of the German Embassy

I work as a counsellor in the German Embassy, and it’s my great honor to be here. I was touched by his art from several aspects. First, I’m pleased to see so many works created by an artist. Second, there are various themes depicted in his works and some had been implied repeatedly. Besides, some of his works are extremely simple. I believe he did this on purpose. He used a simple way to create, aiming to reflect the real lives of common people, so that he could show deeper feelings towards the local people. It’s nothing about lack of techniques. I’m very honored to be here on behalf of the German Embassy. I really like this exhibition and sincerely wish Mr. Liu a great success. Thank you.

Ambassador's wife of Bangladesh Embassy

This is a very interesting and unique exhibition that covers a broad range of themes. The portrait of a cleaner, for example, is very vivid. Mr. Liu is a very special person. He has eyes that always sees the beautiful aspect of life. Though some of the things he depicted were not so pretty in real life, they were all amazingly gorgeous in his works.

I make sculptures myself, flowers and birds, etc. After seeing this exhibition, I feel ashamed of the limit my works in these two themes. I have planned to cover the similar themes in the future like Mr. Liu’s. His works are inspirations for me and, I believe, for others as well. This is an excellent exhibition.

Ambassador of Nigeria

I'm very glad to be here. This is a very successful exhibition. Mr. Liu works very hard and although he is at this age, he is still creating works. His works are lively and emotional. Though he accepted Western education, the techniques and methods he used are Chinese ones. The local China lives he depicted are very vivid.

Ambassador's wife of Embassy of Israel

I'm extremely impressed by this exhibition for two reasons: First, he depicted the real Chinese rural life instead of city life. Second, the facial expressions he depicted, either happy or sad, could be told from the works. Third, he made extraordinary work when demonstrating the details. In his works, we can see wrinkles on robes and scales on fish. His works are so vivid that his ideas and thoughts that lay behind it could be expressed. There’s one piece of work that impressed me very deeply. It generally depicts a giant bird protecting a little bird underneath, and the little one opened its mouth waiting for food. This work is a vivid art work that reflects animals’ emotions. I really like this exhibition and I’m glad I can see it!
