Beijing Stories: Sculptures by Liu Shiming and Photographs by Lois Conner

Dates: Jan 16 - Mar 21, 2025

The Liu Shiming Art Gallery is delighted to announce, “Beijing Stories: Sculptures by Liu Shiming and Photographs by Lois Conner,” an exhibition opening on Thursday, January 16, and running through March 21, 2025. This exhibition juxtaposes two powerful perspectives on Beijing from the 1980s through 2010, pairing the evocative sculptures of Liu Shiming with the panoramic photographs of Lois Conner. Together, their works offer a profound and complementary narrative of a city in transformation, showcasing its resilience, evolution, and the enduring spirit of its people.

Liu Shiming’s sculptures, created in Beijing from the 1980s until his passing in 2010, chronicle the city’s dramatic urbanization and cultural transformation. Through his work, Liu observed the challenges and adaptations faced by rural migrants transitioning to urban life, capturing their determination to preserve community and tradition amidst Beijing’s rapid expansion as the political and cultural heart of China.

Lois Conner, who has visited China almost every year since 1984, brings an external yet deeply personal view through her panoramic photographs. Using a large-format 7” x 17” banquet camera, she presents Beijing’s landscapes and intimate moments with extraordinary clarity and detail. Her work reveals the nuanced tension between a city embracing modernity while retaining the character and culture of its past.
